No, you don't see K2 from the road, not even from the Chiragsaldi
Pass. Here the facts:
(all images greated with Global
Mapper and SRTM-DEMs, from where I also measured the hights)
![]() Map of the Region Mazar - Chiragsaldi La in the Kunlun
Shan. The Highway 219 leads over the Chiragsaldi Pass to Mazar. The lila
colored regions mark the places from where you can see K2 (8611m) in the
Karakorum: From the Highway, not even from the Chiragsaldi Pass (see graph
below), it will never come in sight. If you really want to see this mighty
peak, you have to climb somewhat. The best view from a point that is accessible
in a reasonable time is the peak in the South of pass (ca. 5370m). But
this means a climb of around 420m! You have to be quite strong. If you want to know from where K2 is in view in the Kunlun Shan (Range N to East from K2), then look at this map here (800kb) |
![]() Line of Sight from Chirgagsaldi La to K2. There is no view of K2. |
![]() Line of Sight from the peak (ca.5370m) south of Chirgagsaldi
La to K2. There must be a great view K2! |
